Walkthrough 3: the second deployment
Part 3 of 4. Previous: generate and deliver. Next: rollback and recovery.
Change content or a model, then deploy
Section titled “Change content or a model, then deploy”Publish new content or change a model in the CMS. Settings → Source & delivery shows Out of date. Press Deploy on the Standalone backend card.
Deploy calls your build webhook. Your repository’s own dee-wan-build.yml then:
- pulls the site’s definitions with a short-lived
BUILD_TOKEN. - runs the regeneration script committed in your repository.
- adds the next migration without rewriting existing migrations.
- typechecks the backend, then installs, checks, builds and bundles the website.
- commits, and deploys that exact commit through
deploy-from-repository.yml.
What the second deployment keeps
Section titled “What the second deployment keeps”- Everything under the owned zone, byte for byte.
- Shared files, with missing required keys added.
- Your own tables and their rows.
- Every migration already applied. An applied migration is never rewritten.
What it replaces
Section titled “What it replaces”- Every generated file.
- The rows of generated content tables, from the new published snapshot. A row the snapshot does not hold is deleted, whoever wrote it.
ACCESS_CONFIG: the CMS-issued read tokens fromaccess/read-tokens.jsontogether withvars.ACCESS_CONFIGin yourwrangler.jsonc, or a valid empty token list (tokens: []) when there are none.
When it refuses
Section titled “When it refuses”If a check refuses the build, deployment stops before the new commit is deployed. The last deployed website keeps serving. Common refusals:
| Refusal | Meaning |
|---|---|
| An edited generated file, named | Move the change into src/owned/, then deploy again. |
site_check_unavailable |
The site’s type checker could not load. Its dependency install is incomplete. |
site_check_failed, site_build_failed |
The website does not typecheck or build. |
site_bundle_failed |
Wrangler cannot bundle the website’s Worker. |
A generation refusal such as relation_type_unsupported |
A model shape cannot be generated. Settings lists these before you deploy. |
Next: rollback and recovery.
